Three Cumberland Panther teams to vie for NCAFA A-Cup championship
By Fred Sherwin
Oct. 28, 2024

For the second year in a row the Cumberland Panthers will have at least three teams competing for one of four NCAFA A-Cup titles next weekend as the club's U12, U14 and U16 squads have all won their respective semi-finals.

The mosquito team beat the Gloucester South Raiders 31-8 on Saturday to earn a ticket to the U12 'ship. Jacob Kavanaugh scored three touchdowns for the Panthers and Grayson Rouleau added another along with a single in the win. Nico Scarfone went three-for-three on his extra point kicks, which count for two points each at the mosquito level, to complete the team's scoring.

On Sunday, the Panthers' U14 peewee team punched their ticket to the A-Cup championship with a solid 35-7 win over the Bell Warriors. Jesse Momo and Zach Ninaber each scored twice for the Panthers, while Amari Berlin and Keli Asem each added a touchdown of their own. The Panthers defence also got in on the act with a safety in the first half.

Both the U12 and U14 teams are heading into the A-Cup championships undefeated and hoping to avenge their respective losses in last year's A-Cup title games.

The U14 Panthers will face the Bell-Air Lions for all the marbles at the Nepean Sportsplex field next Sunday. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. In their only meeting earlier this season the Panthers beat the Lions 61-36 on Aug. 25.

Meanwhile, the U12 Panthers will face the West Carleton Wolverines in the mosquito final at 11 a.m. Both teams go into the chamionship game with identical 10-records.

But the marquee match-up of the day on championship Sunday will be a renatch between the defending champion Panthers and the Glocuester South Raiders in the U16 bantam final.

The Raiders beat the Panthers by a single point last Wednesday in the second game of a round robin semi-final tournament betwen the Panthers, Raiders and the Ottawa South Mustangs. Since the Panthers had already beaten the Mustangs in the opening round robin game, they needed the Raiders to do the same on Sunday to set up the rubber match. The Raiders obliged by beating Ottawa South 29-22 and so the rematch is on starting at 3 p.m. at the Sportsplex.
