Garneau Gaulois capture second spot for provincial 'AA' volleyball championships

Nov. 17, 2023

The Garneau Gaulois senior boys volleyball team will be heading to Stratford for the OFSAA provincial 'AA' championships next week after they beat Collège catholique Mer Bleue in the National Capital "play in" game for the region's second spot in the tournament on Monday.

The Béatrice-Desloges Bulldogs had already won the NCSSAA's first berth in the OFSAA tournament by finishing the season with a 5-1 record. The Bulldogs represented the National Capital region at last year's provincial championships and ultimately finished second, which gave the NCSSAA an extra berth in this year's tournament.

After losing the first set 25-21 in Monday's pay in game, Garneau reeled off three straight sets by scores of 25-18, 25-18 and 25-19 to upset the previously unbeaten Mer Bleue squad and earn their ticket to OFSAA.

The second set was relatively close until Garneau went on a 5-1 run with a trio of block shots to close the set out. After spotting Mer Bleue the first three points in the third set, Garneau reeled off eight straight points to take a commanding 11-3 lead.

The two teams then exchanged points to get to 17-12 before Garneau went on another run to get to 23-14. They would eventually win the second set 25-18.

In the fourth and deciding set, Garneau scored five unanswered points to take a 13-7 lead and then after Mer Bleue fought back to narrow the deficit to 14-11, Garneau went on another run to extend their advantage to 23-14. From there it was just a matter of time before they closed the match out.
