Orléans East-Cumberland city councillor Matt Luloff is facing an impaired driving charge for an incident that happened earlier this month.
The news came out late Monday night and the story was broken by CTV News, although where and how they got the tip from is unknown, along with exactly when or where the incident took place.
What is known is that Luloff has been charged with impaired driving and will make his first court appearance on Aug. 8, as was confirmed by his lawyer Lawrence Greenspon to CTV News. The event in question likely took place on or near July 10, which is when the Conservative Party of Canada accepted Luoff's withdrawal as the party's candidate in Orléans.
Luloff himself has declined to talk to the press, refering any questions on the matter to his lawyer while the charge takes it's legal course. For now, he can continue his duties as a city councilor. The news is both shocking and disappointing.
Luloff is a veteran of the war in Afghanistan. After returning home in 2009, he was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and received a medical release from the Canadian Armed Forces. After seeking treatment, he started a support groupd for fellow veterans who suffer from PSD.
In 2018, he successfully ran against 14 other candidates to win the city council seat in Orléans, replacing the outgoing Bob Monette who retired after 12 years on council.
Since first getting elected, Luloff has become one of the most popular members on city council. In 2022, he was reelected with an astounding 74 per cent majority of the vote. As council liaison for veteran and military issues, Luloff has defended the causes of military veterans. He is also chair of the Ottawa Library Board. A position he assumed in 2020.
