Local blind/deaf gofer Kevin Frost added another title to his collection this past summer with a win at the Western Saskatchewan G&C Invitational last month.
His competitive golf season started with a trip to the United Kingdom where he finished fourth in his sight category at British Blind Open.
He followed that result up with a second place result at the Ontario provincial champ-ionships in Simcoe last month.
Following the Western Sask-atchewan G&C Invitational, Frost placed second at the Canadian Open Blind Golf Championships in Simcoe.
In each of the tournaments, Frost gained valuable points in his quest to earn one of eight spots on Team Canada at next year’s World Blind Golf Championships.
With two tournaments left on the calendar this month, Frost is hoping to clinch a position on the team. The next opportunity to pick up some points is at a tournament in Perth from Sept. 25-27.
After that, Frost will be heading to Kansas City as a member Team Canada to take on Team USA at the American Blind Golf Open from Oct. 19-25.
After missing out on an opportunity to play in the World Championships last year, Frost’s goal is to qualify for next year’s event in Spain.
Away from competition, Frost once again hosted a series of six youth blind golfing camps at the White Sands Par 3 golf course in Orléans and the Pine View Golf Club on Blair Road.
“That’s a medal in itself,” says Frost about the camps. “It’s just fun watching the kids hit the ball for the first time and learn the game. It’s more uplifting than of my own personal achievements.”
Eighteen kids attended the six camps. Some of them attended more than one camp and there were several returnees from last year.
For a majority of the kids, however, it was their first time holding a golf club and hitting a golf ball.
The camps are fully funded by the Ottawa Senators Foundation and are co-run by Frost and professional golf instructor Steve Oostrom from the Ottawa Golf Academy.
This was the third year the youth blind golf camps have taken place with the support of the Ottawa Senators Foundation, and Frost is already looking forward to holding the camps again next year..
