Navan spa severely damaged by fire, GoFundMe page created to help owner

The Country Moments Spa and Wellness Centre in Navan was severly damaged by fire Sunday night, leaving it's owner and the entire community in shock.

Firefighters were called to the scene at approximately 7 p.m. When they arrived there was thick black smoke coming from the two storey building at the corner of Trim and Smith Roads and flames had reached the second floor kitchen area.

It took firefighters approximately two hours to get the blaze under control. By then the building had suffered extensive damge.

The spa is located in the the Shaw House which dates back to 1876. Before it became a spa, the Shaw House was the home of Laura's Corner, a popular home furnishings store.

News of last night's fire first circulated on the Navan Helping Hands Facebook page shortly after the firefighters arrived. Most people reacted with sadness over how the fire would impact its owner Amanda Watson who has become a key member of the community.

Within hours of the fire, friends of Watson created a GoFunMe page to raise money to help her out. By Monday morning, the fund had already raised over $12,000. Anyone wishing to make a donation can do so by clicking on the link GoFundMe.

Besides owning the Country Moments Spa and Wellness Centre, Watson is also the person behind the Original Navan Market which takes place once a month during the spring, summer and fall. She has also helped organize a number of activities and initiatives in Navan.
