The National Capital secondary school track and field championships were held at the Terry Fox Atheltic Facility at Mooney's Bay this week with student athletes competing from across the city including Orléans and the surrounding area.

Up for grabs was qualfication for the OFSAA East Reginal championships being held in Belleville next week. In order to qualify for the OFSSAA regional meet the athletes had to finish in the top five in their event.

All told, 57 different athletes managed to earn an invitation to the East Regional in an individual event, while several others did so in the relays.

Tasei Tan from École secondaire catholique Béatrice-Desloges sprints his way to a new meet record in the junior boys 100-metre hurdles on the second day of the NCSSAA track and field championships on May 24. Eighteen athletes managed to qualify in multiple events including Tahlia Aird-Greaves from Gisèle-Lalonde who won the Novice Girls 100 metre sprint, 80-metre hurdles and long jump.

Laila Lebel from Colonel By Secondary School also qualified in three events – the novice girls 800 metres (3rd), 1500 (2nd) and 3000 (3rd), as did Zachary Jeggo from École secondaire publique Louis-Riel in the senior boys 200 metres (4th), 400 metres (1st), 400-metre hurdles (1st) and Daniel Cova, also from Louis-Riel who won the senior boys 3,000 and placed second in both the 1500 and the Open Boys Steeplechase.

But the three most successful athletes on the day were hurdlers Tasei Tan from École secondaire catholique Béatrice-Desloges and École secondaire publique Gisèle-Lalonde teammates Timéo Atonfo and Tahlia Aird-Greaves.

Aird-Greaves was the only triple event winner from the east end with wins in the novice girls long jump, 100 metre sprint and 80-metre hurdles.

Despite a late start to the season thanks to an ankle injury suffered on the basketball court last month, Atonfo was still able to secure wins in the senior boys 100-metre hurdles and the long jump. He also qualified for the East Regionals in the triple jump.

But the day belonged to Tasei Tan from Béatrice-Desloges who set new meet records in both the junior boys 100- and 300-metre hurdles. He stopped the clock in 13.90 in the 100-metres hurdles to break the previous record held by former Giséle-Lalonde athlete Leewinchell Jean since 2017. And he ran a 40.08 in the 300-metre hurdles to better the record held for 28 years by former St. Matthew High School athlete Matt Stenson.

Zachary Jeggo also managed to get his name in the record books by running a 47.96 in the senior boys 400-metre final. His time smashed the old record set 38 years ago by nearly half a second.

Other east end athletes who stood out this week include Mallea McMullin from Louis-Riel who came within 50 centimetres of breaking the meet record in the novice girls javelin held by Heather MacDonald since 1977; Danica Mulvihill, also from Louis-Riel who won the senior girls 100-metre hurdles and placed 4th and 5th in the 200 and 100 metres respectively; and Franckie Cobby from St. Peter High School who won the senior girls triple jump and placed 4th in the long jump.

Other individual event winners include Lydie Glory Boli from Louis-Riel in the junior girls 100 metres; Allan Bordovsky from Colonel By in the novice boys 400 metres; and Mikhael Atonfo from St. Peter in the novice boys 300-metre hurdles; .
