The Cumberland Cobras U15 Academy team are provincial champs after downing the London Whitecaps 2-1 in their Ontario Cup final on Sept. 14.

The Cobras spotted the Whitecaps a 1-0 first half lead before roaring back in the second stanza to tie and then eventually win the game on a pair of goals by Amelia Thompson and Ella Riley.

It took 24 minutes before Londonís Jamie Lefebrve opened the scoring with a shot that deflected off a Cumber-land defender past Cobrasí keeper Anna Demarbre.

As the remainder of the first half played out, neither team was able to create much space and the scoring chances were few and far between.

The same was true at the outset of the second stanza until Thompsonís goal tied the game in the 65th minute. The goal sparked a flurry of chances by both sides as the each team threw caution to the wind in an effort to break the deadlock.

The difference in the game ended up being a penalty shot which was called after Thompson was brought down in the box by a London defender. The job of taking the shot was given to Riley who very coolly slotted her attempt into the back of the London net.

After the goal the Cobras did a stellar job preventing the Whitecaps from getting any clear shots and eventually ran out the clock for the epic win.

The win marks the second time in as many years that the Cumberland United Soccer Club has won an Ontario Cup. The U13 girls Academy team accomplished the feat last year, becoming just the third team from Eastern Ontario to do so in over two decades.

Following their Ontario Cup win, the U15 Cobras went on to win the U16 ERSL Cup by downing the Kingston Clippers 2-0 on Sept. 16.

The Cumberland girls have spent the past two weeks preparing for the Toyota National Championships which will take place in Laval from Oct. 3-8.

The Cobras are in a group with Mountain United from British Columbia and PEI FC from Prince Edward Island. There are three other groups in the tournament. The top two teams in each group will advance to the second phase, which is a double elimination format, to select an eventual winner.
