Area athletes put their best feet forward at the recent OFSAA provincial track and field championships in Toronto, winning six medals in all, including three of the silver variety.

Gloucester High School's Andr Alie Lamarche broke the six minute barrier on his way to placing second in the open boys 2000-metre steeplechase. The NCSSAA champion crossed the finish line in 5:55.77, just three seconds behind Marcel Scheele from St. Mary's High School in St. Mary's.

The east end's other individual silver medal was won by Louis-Riel pole vaulter Caroline Poirier who cleared a personal best height of 3.60 metres to finish in second place. Teammate Annabelle Gagn captured the bronze medal with a leap of 3.50 metres. The event was won by Alex Throndson from Silverthorn Collegiate in Toronto.

Gagn was also a member of Louis-Riel's silver medal relay team along with Kayla Vieux, Kadiatou Wann and Megan Roy. The quartet lowered their East Region winning time by a full two seconds, completing the event in 48.25 seconds, just five one-hundredths of a second behind the winners from Picker-ing High School in Ajax.

Elsewhere, Louis-Riel sprinter Eliezer Adjibi won two bronze medals in the senior boys 100- and 200-metre sprints. The National Capital and East Region champion ran a personal best 10.93 in the 100 and 22.94 in the 200, breaking both the 11-second and 23-second barriers over the respective distances.

The five medals along with several top five performances two by Vieux in the 100 metres, where she placed fourth, and the 200 metres where she finished fifth and one by Japhet Divita in the senior boys triple jump helped Louis-Riel achieve a third place finish in the overall aggregate standings at the meet. It is the highest the east end high school has ever placed at the provincial track and field championships.

The east end's only other OFSAA medalist was Gloucester High School's Sophie Barber who won a bronze medal in the senior girls javelin. The Grade 12 student made a successful throw of 39.62 metres on her sixth and final attempt to secure third place in the event.

Anesi Aniya from St. Peter High School had three top 10 finishes in Toronto. She placed fourth in the senior girls 200-metres, seventh in the 110-metre hurdles and 10th in the 100 metres.

Fellow St. Peter Knight, Katie New-love, had two top ten finishes. She placed fourth in the junior girls 3,000 metres and seventh in the 1500. Gloucester High School's Corrine Abouem rounded out the east end's top list with a fifth place result in the midget girls shot put.
