By Fred Sherwin
Orléans Online

For the first time in more than 20 years, the Gloucester Wolverines have a Division 1 provincial championship to add to their trophy case.

The title was captured by the Wolverines U16 boys team which emerged victorious from the three-day Ontario Cup tournament held in Ottawa from May 12-14.

The Gloucester Wolverines pose with Ontario Cup banner after winning the provincial Division 1 championship on May 14. Members of the team include Noah Masena, Isaiah Pemberton, Sacha Gauthier, Zion Lim, Rene Konga, Keith Rowen, Ayden Vineberg, Kemeal Khaddage, Shandon Anderson, Marcus Hollingsworth, Zach Stone and Alex Atherton and Nasiyeh Nour. The Wolverines entered the tournament as the number one seed having swept the competition in the Ontario Basketball League's X-Division through the regular season and playoffs, winning all 11 of their games.

The team got off to a face start downing the fifth seed Ancaster Blitz Elite 78-63 in their opening game. They followed that up with a 72-61 win over the eighth seed from Scarborough in the morning draw on Day 2 and continued their winning streak with a 65-48 win over the third seed Mississauga Monarchs to finish first in their pool.

After getting a good night's rest the Wolverines faced off against the Monarchs for a rematch in the gold medal game and ultimately emerged victorious, downing their Mississauga rivals 68-63 in a highly competitive affair.

Sacha Gauthier was named the tourna-ment MVP, joining Noah Masena, OBL X-Division regular season MVP, and Isaiah Pemberton, OBL X-Division post-season MVP in picking up that honour.

All three players have been playing together since Atom under the tutelage of head coach Daren Pemberton.

The Ontario Cup caps a three year run for the Wolverines that began in 2016 with the Division 2 title and continued last year with a bronze medal in the Division 1 tournament.
