Minor hockey season wraps up with House League championships
By Fred Sherwin

The local winter minor hockey season wrapped up on Sunday with the final eight games of the Gloucester Hockey Association’s House League championships.

The marquee game of the day, and perhaps the entire weekend, was the Bantam ‘A’ final between the Gloucester Centre Cougars and the Blackburn Stingers, which the Stingers won behind the MVP performance of their goalie Aaron Trellet, who picked up the shutout in a 3-0 win.

Jaden Tejero scored the opening goal at the 3:39 mark of the first period on a pass from Mathieu Beauchemin.

Beauchemin then gave his team a two goal cushion late in the third period with a perfectly placed wrist shot that beat the Cougar netminder high glove side.

The final moments of the game were made interesting when the Stingers took a penalty, giving the Cougars a two-man advantage with 1:40 left to go.

Trellet was at his absolute best in turning away several close calls before Tejero was awarded a goal after being tripped up on his way to a vacant Gloucester Centre net.

The Blackburn Stingers had three other teams in the finals, but all three teams came up on the short end of the score sheet.

The Novice B team lost 3-1 to the Leitrim Hawks in the B2 final; the Peewee B squad lost 4-3 in the B2 final, also to a team from Leitrim; and the Midget B team lost 3-1 to the Orléans Blues in the Midget B1 championship game.

The latter game was one of three wins for the Orléans Minor Hockey Association on the weekend. OMHA teams won the Peewee A final; the Midget B1 champion-ship; and the Midget A final. The only game they lost was the Peewee B1 final, which was won by the Russell Warriors by a 2-0 score.

This was the first year that the GHA championship finals were contested with-out the presence of any teams from the Cumberland Minor Hockey Association.

The CMHA Cumberland Dukes and the Jr. Grads split away from the GHA at the end of last season to form their own District and play their RepB games against teams from District 3 in the Lower Ottawa Valley.

Cumberland teams won the Midget B, Peewee A, and Bantam B House League championship games.
