By Fred Sherwin
St. Peter Knights varsity girls rugby team will be competing
for a bronze medal at the OFSAA AAA provincial championships
at Twin Elm Park in Nepean later today.
not the medal the Knights were hoping to play for today,
but it's a medal nonetheless and even a bronze medal is
better than no medal at all.
fourth-seeded Knights were relegated to the bronze medal
game after suffering a 24-12 loss to the number one seed
and defending champions, Oakville Traflagar Red Devils
opponents in today's game will be the team from St. Roch
Catholic Secondary School in Brampton which lost 26-12
to John F. Ross Collegiate in yesterday's other semi-final.
Knights were undefeated heading into their game against
Oakville, having won their first two games 31-10 and 10-7.
opened the tournament with a win over Ursuline College
from Chatham on Tuesday on tries by Grace Blundun, Sarah
Pedlar, Sydney Weatherall, Emily Tippins and Kaitlyn Rea
who was successful on three convert attempts. They then
beat I.E. Weldon from Lindsay 10-7 on a pair of second
half tries by Rea after trailing 7-0 at the half to advance
to the semis.
Knights were hoping to make it to the championship game
for the second year in a row, but this year's bracket
worked against them in setting up the semifinal showdown
years ago, the Knights won the consolation final after
being knocked out of the championship bracket with a loss
in the all-important second game.
bronze medal game kicks off at 10:30 a.m.
