Eastern Ontario Wild clinch Minor Bantam AAA title
By Fred Sherwin
Orléans Online

The Eastern Ontario Wild wrapped up the Ontario East Minor Hockey League AAA Minor Bantam playoff championship last week with a 4-0 win over the Ottawa Jr. 67s.

The victory gave the Wild the two points they needed to clinch the first to seven point final series seven points to one.

The Wild advanced to the final having knocked off the Ottawa Senators seven points to three in the semifinals after spotting the Sens a 3-1 lead after the first two games.

After dropping the opening game against the Senators 3-2, the Wild had to settle for a 2-2 tie in Game 2.

Game 3 was a vastly different story as the Wild romped to a lopsided 9-0 win to even the series at three points apiece.

Game 4 was slightly more competitive, but the Wild still managed to carry the day and take away the two points with a 3-1 result setting up an 11-0 whitewash in Game 5.

After taking a two-week hiatus during the March Break, a refreshed Wild side won the first two games of the final, 5-2 and 2-1, before the Jr. 67s managed to hold them to a 3-3 draw in Game 3.

Game 4 was all Wild with Rocco Testa Basi and Dylan Peterson scoring two goals each and Joe Vrbetic earning the shutout.

The playoff championship capped a season in which the Wild also won the regular season title with a record of 18-5-6 and the prestigious Toronto Marlies Holiday Classic tournament.

Thirteen players on the 17 man roster were on the Major Peewee AAA team that won the regular season and playoff championship last season, including Cumberland Jr. Grads products Alex Rossides and Chazka Bush, giving them four championship banners in total in the past two seasons.

The Wild draws its players from the Jr. Grads, the Eastern Ontario Cobras and the Seaway Valley Rapids. Besides Rossides and Bush, the Minor Bantam team also included Ryan Stansel, who played on the Jr. Grads’ Major Peewee AA team last season.

The Eastern Ontario Wild Minor Bantam AAA team recently won the OEMHL playoff championship to go along with the regular season title already in their possession.

Like their younger Wild brethren, the Major Bantam team was also double champions this season, winning both the regular season and post season titles.

They also managed to pick up a bronze medal at the provincial championships last week in Rockland.

The lone Cumberland representative on the team was goaltender Justin Lalonde.

The Navan native posted a 1.50 goals against average in four playoff appearances, and backstopped the team to a 2-0 shutout against the Ottawa Jr. 67s in the semifinals.
