Tentative deal first step towards saving high school athletic season

By Fred Sherwin
Orléans Online

Word that the province has reached a tentative deal with the public high school teachers union should come as good news to area students.

But before they start celebrating too hard, there are still a lot of pieces that must fall into place before the upoming high school athletic season can be rescued, starting with ratification of the deal by the province's secondary school teachers.

They will get a chance to vote on the package next week. Should they ratify it, it could pave the way for a similar deal between the province and the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association (OECTA). Should they reject it then we're back to square one and the season will, in all likelihood, be lost.

The National Capital Secondary School Athletic Association has already informed area schools that unless a deal is in place, the upcoming fall season will be forfeited. That means no football, no soccer and no girls basketball, to name just a few of the sports that are played during the fall semester.

The OECTA is scheduled to return to the bargaining table on August 20.
