surrender three goal lead in the third, lose to Kanata in a shootout
By Fred Sherwin Orléans
Online The
Cumberland Grads had the Kanata Stallions right where they wanted them at the
Navan Arena Sunday afternoon. They were up 3-0 with 13:27 left to go in the third
and their goalie Adam Laderoute had stopped everything the Stallions had thrown
at him. But
then the unthinkable happened, Gabriel Parent's goal at the 14:20 mark of the
period sparked a three goal outburst by the Stallions, fueled by back-to-back
penalties at the 12:22 mark and the 10:21 mark which resulted in a power play
goal with 9:57 left in the game, and culminated in a shorthanded goal with two
minutes left in regulation to force overtime After
neither team scored in the extra session, Kanata managed to score the only goal
in the shootout to steal the extra point from the Grads who are now winless in
their last three games. The
Grads started out well enough, directing 10 shots at Kanata goaltender Sebastien
Parker in the first period, including a shot from Doug Harvey which found it's
way into the back of the net for the opening goal. Following
a scoreless second period in which the Grads outshot the Stallions 13-7, Cumberland
got a jump on Kanata in the third, scoring two goals in the first two and half
minutes, including a goal by Kevin Tansey off the opening faceoff. Greg
Sartoretto gave the Grads a three goal lead off a pass from Rob Caperelli before
the wheels started to fall off. The
Grads only have three days to regroup before they play back-to-back road games
on Thursday and Friday against the Cornwall Grads and the red hot Gloucester Rangers
who are 6-0-0-1 since the holiday break. They
Grads will return to Navan for a game against the Nepean Raiders on Sunday. The
opening faceoff is at 3 p.m. (This
story was made possible thanks to the generous support of our local
