Area athletes win five gold medals at provincial age group championships

East end athletes continue to shine on the track this summer, adding a bevy of medals at the provincial age class track and field championships in Timmins on the weekend to the hardware they won at the Ontario Legion Championships held earlier this month.

Tania Bambi, 15, led the way in Timmins with a pair oif gold medals in the midget girls 80 metre hurdles and the 4x100 metre relay. The Louis Riel high school student also won a silver medal in the 200-metre hurdles and placed eighth in the 100-metre dash.

Cameron Slupeiks, 12, from Beacon Hill won gold in the bantam boys 800 metres and placed sixth in the 1500 where he was the top 12-year-old in the race.

Fallingbrook resident Tolu Makinde, 16, led a contingent of three east end athletes in the youth (U18) 200 metres, winning the race in a time of 22.15 seconds. Devin Biocchi, 17, finished just outside the medals in fourth and Isaiah Moses finished sixth.

Maknide added a silver medal in the 100 and Biocchi managed to bounce back to win the 400 metre final in a time of 49.86 seconds. Moses placed fourth in the 400 and Gabriel Skupek-Martin, 16, came in sixth.

Skupek-Martin would return to the track later on in the day to claim silver in the 300-metre hurdles.

Brian Okeny, 17, was also a double medalist, winning gold on his final attempt in the youth long jump and a silver in the triple jump. The recent Lester B. Pearson grad has qualified for the Canadian Legion Track and Field Championships in Sherbrooke along with Makinde, Bambi, Biocchi and Mohamed Souleiman who placed sixth in the youth 800 metres.
