The Louis Riel Rebelles varsity girls hockey team are on top of the world after winning the gold medal at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association provincial A/AA championships in Orillia on Thursday.

The Rebelles battled St. Joseph's of St. Thomas to a 2-2 tie through three periods of regulation hockey and one 10-minute overtime session before the title had to be settled in a nerve-racking simultaneous shoutout that went seven rounds before a winner was finally decided.

The shootout heroes were Isabel Menard who scored both of the Rebelles shootout goals including the game winner in the seventh round and goalie Kaitlyn Bourgon who stopped six of the seven shots she faced.

The win was especially emotional for Rebelles coach Carl Menard whose twin daughters Isabel and Talia are both graduating this year and heading off to Syracuse University where they've have both been offered scholarships.

During the OFSAA tournament the twin sisters had five points each: Isabel scored three goals, including the game tying goal in the final, and Talia had two goals.

The OFSAA championship game marked the last time that Menard will coach his daughters. The Rebelles finished the season with a record of
29-2-2.
