A 75-year-old Queenswwod Heights resident is dead and his 75-year-old wife is being treated for carbon monoxide poisoning after they were found in their home by a friend on Tuesday.
Paramedics responded to a 9-1-1 call at 383 Phoenix Cres. at 10:45 a.m. where they found the elderly man already deceased and the woman in severe distress. Firefighters responding to the scene helped extricate the woman who was rushed to the Ottawa Hospital where she is being treated in a hyperbaric chamber.
The firefighters took measurements of the carbon monoxide levels in the home and found readings as high as 700 parts per million (ppm).
Health Canada’s indoor air quality guidelines set limits of 10 ppm for long-term exposure and 25 ppm for short periods less than an hour.
The friend was also transported to the Ottawa Hospital for an assessment and later released. Several pets were also taken out of the house and found to be unaffected.
While the exact source of the carbon monoxide has yet to be determined, but the natural gas furnace is the prime suspect. The house also has a fireplace, but it is not know if it was in use or not.
The Ottawa Fire Services recommend that all houses be equipped with a carbon monoxide detector as well as smoke detectors. Carbon monoxide detectors cost under $40. combo smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are also highly recommended.
