Rotary Club of Orléans honours local youth
By Mike Beasley

Ambition, creativity and leadership skills are just a few important ingredients which very often lead to success in life.

These key attributes and character traits were the common denominators as the Rotary Club of Orléans handed out their annual Young People of Character Awards at the Shenkman Arts Centre on June 4.

A total of 31 awards were given out to area youngsters who excelled in one of nine categories — creativity, leadership, social responsibility, positive attitude, courage, persistence, compassion, entrepreneurship and commitment to excellence.

“We have to thank the award recipients for their efforts within our community, it’s truly amazing to see what they have achieved,” said Teresa Whitmore, president of the Rotary Club of Orleans.

“In addition, we have to honour the parents, coaches, teachers and mentors for showing this group the meaning of excellence, ambition, determination, passion and leadership. To have these leaders working with our youth means the community of Orléans is doing something right.”

Several present day leaders were in attendance to hand out the awards and see who these young, impressive up and comers are.

Orléans MP Andrew Leslie presented Celeste Beauchamp with an award for Social Responsibility, while Ottawa-Orléans MPP Marie-France Lalonde presented Elizabeth Cowley with the award for Social Responsibility as well.

Orléans Ward city councillor Bob Monette had the honour of presenting Wiebke Mueller-Meinhard with her plaque for demonstrating outstanding courage.

An international exchange student from Jever, Germany (near Hamburg) Mueller-Meinhard has called Orléans her home since last September and has been enrolled in Grade 11 at École secondaire publique Gisèle-Lalonde during her stay.

Already bilingual in German and English, Mueller-Meinhard wanted to add French to her language repertoire.

The trilingual student-athlete got the nod for Courage after undergoing heart surgery then returning to the playing field and courts merely weeks later.

“I am very proud to win this award and really appreciate that my school and the Orléans Rotary Club have recognized my efforts because I have loved every second of my time in this part of Ottawa, Mueller-
Meinhard said, with just a hint of a German accent.

She will be going back to Germany in July but has fallen in love with Eastern Ontario so much that she plans at looking into the possibility of attending university here in a couple of years.

This is the third year the Rotary Club has held the Young People of Character Awards. The Rotary Club of Orléans was chartered in 2008 and is one of nine member Clubs in the Ottawa region.
