Orléans MPP Andrew Leslie has been appointed as the Parliamentary Secretary to Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland with the added responsibility of sitting on a Cabinet committee charged with forging close and strong ties with the incoming Trump administration.

A former Lieutenant-General, whose paternal and maternal grandfathers both served as Ministers of National Defence after World War II, Leslie will be regarded as the Cabinet's answer to the large number of former generals Preisdent elect Donald Trump has appointed to his own Cabinet.

According to a press release issues by the Prime Minister's office, Leslie will play "a critical role in building ties with the new U.S. administration."

"As a retired lieutenant-general with years of experience working with the U.S., I know he has the necessary relationships and experience to help establish a constructive dialogue with the new U.S. administration," Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a statement released Wednesday.

In response, Leslie issued a press release in which he promised to fulfill his new duties to the best of his abilities.

"I have gratefully and humbly accepted the Prime Minister's offer and as I have done consistently throughout my life, I will invest every effort to serve Canada to the best of my abilities," said Leslie who will be relinquishing his duties as Government Whip when the new appointment comes in effect on January 30.

Leslie also issued a statement to his consituents in the press release promising to continue to represent them with "dedication and diligence".

"I am indebted to all of you for your trust and for the support you have given me since the election.  I will continue to serve and represent Orléans with dedication and diligence, of that you can be assured."
