According to a press release issues by the Prime Minister's office, Leslie will play "a critical role in building ties with the new U.S. administration."

In response, Leslie issued a press release in which he promised to fulfill his new duties to the best of his abilities.

"I have gratefully and humbly accepted the Prime Minister's offer and as I have done consistently throughout my life, I will invest every effort to serve Canada to the best of my abilities," said Leslie who will be relinquishing his duties as Government Whip when the new appointment comes in effect on January 30.
