Marie-France Lalonde has a new job. The Ottawa-Orléans MPP has been appointed as the new Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services in a mini-Cabinet shuffle announced by Premier Kathleen Wynne on Thursday.

Lalonde, who is a first term MPP, replaces David Orazietti in her new role after having served as the Minister of Government and Consumer Services for the past seven months. Orazietti recently resigned to spend more time with his family.

Lalonde is the third Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services in the past seven months. The new appointment will not effect the MPP's ongoing position as the Minister Responsible for Francophone Affairs.

As Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services, Lalonde will oversee the Ontario Provincial Police and the province's 30 prisons, jails and detention centres, including the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre on Innes Road which is located within her riding.

The OCDC has been under scrutiny for a variety of issues from the use of shower stalls as cells, constant labour unrest, understaffing and, most recently, startling revelations about the mistreatment of inmates in solitary confinement.
