Residents in the east end community will now be able to enjoy a cold glass of "This One".

On Nov. 3, a gathering was held at OCCO Kitchen on Innes Rd., as the Stray Dog Brewing Company tapped their first keg of their brew “This One” and celebrated being Orléans first craft brewery.

Three brewers, Marc Plante, Justin MacNeill, and Gen Benay, are the brains behind Stray Dog.

The planning started around three years ago when the team were respective home brewers, however, they wanted to take their passion for beer and share it with the world.

“It started off as mainly an excuse to drink beers together and daydream,” said MacNeill. “But as we started doing more research we kind of started thinking we may be able to do this.”

When they made their recipe for This One the team said it planted the seed to open up a brewery.

Now, after tapping their first keg, Stray Dog is looking forward to opening their brewery next spring in the Taylor Creek business park.

So what’s the history behind This One? The style is a California Common beer which MacNeill said is a unique North American-style “rich in history that dates back to the gold rush era.”

“We decided to go with this style because despite its name it’s actually very uncommon. With the exception of a couple small breweries no one else is making it and we happen to think it’s delicious.”

He added that the beer is also an award-winning recipe that they’ve brewed for the past two years.

“As far as the name goes, it’s called This One and you might be wondering why we decided to call it that… the idea is you go in and see it on a menu and say to your server I’ll take This One.”

MacNeill said they will only have the brew on tap for the first bit, but they have several other beers they’re planning on releasing once the brewery is up and running.

“As Orléans first craft brewery, it’s our obligation to the community to put out the best possible beer we can.”

Plante added that if it wasn’t for those who helped the team, they couldn’t be where they are today.

“We couldn’t have done it without the support of our family and friends and also the microbreweries in the area. They’ve been supportive in giving information and helping us out.”

This One is currently available on tap at OCCO Kitchen on Innes and will soon be available at additional restaurants including Broadway’s at Orléans Gardens.
