Uber vehicle-for-hire service now legal in Ottawa... almost

As of Friday, it is now legal for Uber drivers to operate in the City of Ottawa so long as they meet certain requirements such as possessing the proper insurance for transporting individuals for compensation.

Uber itself must also purchase a license from the city before tnheir dirvers can operate legally, something they have so far neglected to do, despite knowing the new regulations would come into effect on Sept. 30 for months.

One of the prerequisites for obtaining a license to operate a vehicle-for-hire service is having at least $5 million in commercial liability insurance and $5 million in Non-Owned Automobile insurance.

Uber Canada spokeswoman Susie Heath says the company has applied for the private transportation company license and they expect to receive it within the next few days. Otherwise their drivers are "fully compliant" with the new bylaw.

Until Uber obtains a license their drivers may be subject to fines of up $750 for a first offence.
