Latest Biggest Loser a true inspiration to others

Guy Brunet is a big loser and he’s proud of it. The 39-year-old husband and father of one, recently took part in the 180-Degree Fitness Centre’s Biggest Loser Program and lost 64 lbs.

Not only was he crowned the fitness centre’s newest Biggest Loser, but he officially became the biggest Biggest Loser raising the bar for greatest weight loss and highest percentage of weight loss at 26.6 per cent over the duration of the six week program.

“I’ve never felt better. I’m in the best shape of my life,” says Brunet, who’s managed to drop another 11 pounds since the program ended.

Brunet’s inspiration for losing the weight was his five-year-old son Franklin.

“My dad was always very active with us. Whatever sport we were involved in he would end coaching and I want to be able to do the same for my son,” says Brunet who decided to join the Biggest Loser program after seeing the before and after pictures of his friend’s sister who took part in the program last year.

“I had been looking for something for awhile. I have a membership at a local gym, but I really wasn’t losing any weight. I would go a couple of times a week and then not at all for a couple of weeks. It was tough trying to stay motivated,” says Brunet.

Issues with his hip dating back more than six years ago, hampered Brunet’s ability to lead an active lifestyle and lead to a gradual weight gain. He eventually underwent surgery three and a half years ago, but it was followed by a long rehab period during which he gained another 20 lbs.

“It was hard both physically and emotionally,” says Brunet. “I always took the easy out and never really pushed myself very hard."

After visiting the 180-Degree Fitness website and reading up on the Biggest Loser program and the philosophy of its founder and 180-Degree Fitness owner Adrian Delorey, Brunet signed up.

Utilizing the various aspects of the program which combines group workouts, with nutritional advice and personal coaching, Brunet hit his weight loss goal of 35 lbs in the first seven weeks. He would lose an additional 29 lbs in the final five weeks.

“I owe a lot to my wife for taking care of our son while I was at the gym four nights a week. Without her support and encouragement I’m not sure I would have joined,” says Brunet, who also credits hid fellow Biggest Loser participants for his success. “When you’re working out with 27 other people who are in the same position you are it’s pretty motivational."

Before he started the Biggest Loser program, Brunet was on medication to keep his cholesterol levels in check. Since losing the weight and changing his diet he no longer has to take the medication.

And that’s just the beginning. Brunet is teaming up with a fellow Biggest Loser participant to take part in the 10K during Ottawa Race Weekend and the Spartan Run in June.

“Before I joined the Biggest Loser program I was overweight and I had health issues, but now I see a totally different future,” says Brunet. “People invest in RSPs and mutual funds, but it’s just as important to invest in your health, or more important, because if you’re not around to cash the RSPs it’s all for not."
