The Orléans-Cumberland Community Resource Centre is once again reaching out to the local community to help sponsor families facing financial hardship this holiday season.

It may be hard for some people to believe, but there are hundreds of families in Orléans who are forced to cope with financial hardship at any given time. They may have suffered a job loss, they may be in the middle of a separation or divorce, or they may have been saddled with external pressures such as a relative suffering an illness, or an aging parent who is need of care. Whatever the reason, the result is the same – too many expenses and not enough income.

Financial stress is a major cause of depression, anxiety and stress which often leads to marital strife and family crisis.

The Orléans-Cumberland Community Resource Centre is there to help families in need. Whether it’s counseling, assistance in navigating through the social service network, or accessing the food bank, the OCCRC is often a sanctuary of last resort for many people in our community.

At this time of year, the Resource Centre’s primary focus is the holiday season and ensuring that those families in need of assistance receive it.

The OCCRC Christmas Program is actually three programs in one – the Angel Tree program, the Toy Mountain program and the Resource Centre program. Families in need can benefit from all three programs, but first they must register with the food bank, indicating the number of children they have along with their ages and gender. Each family is then assigned a number which corresponds to an individual sponsor.

Members of the public and organizations such as churches, service clubs and school councils act as sponsors by providing a cash donation and gifts depending on the size of the family and the age and gender of the children. The cash donations are used to purchase food items such as fresh vegetables, dairy products and holiday specific food items such as turkeys, ham etc.

When the family comes in to pick up their items they receive their food as well as gifts for the children from the Toy Mountain program the OCCRC Christmas program.

If you are interested in becoming a sponsor you can simply visit the OCCRC website at http://crcoc.ca/christmas-just-around-corner/, and the Christmas Campaign 2015 Sponsor Registration Form.

Simply fill it out and drop it off at the Resource Centre located at 240 Centrum Blvd. across from the Shenkman Arts Centre.

(This story was made possible thanks to the generous support of our local business partners.)
