Little baby Melissa Fils waited just long enough to become the first baby of the New Year, beating out her cousin by just minutes for the distinction.

Sisters Nadia Fils and Anne-Luce Pierre both went into labour on Tuesday and were in separate deliver rooms at the Montfort Hospital unaware of each others predicament.

Anne-Pierre gave birth to a six-pound, six-ounce boy at 12:47 p.m. Fifteen minutes later Baby Melissa came into this world, becoming Ottawa's first New Year newborn.

The seven-pound, three-ounce infant and her little cousin were the centre of attention on Wednesday as various media outlets descended on the east end hospital to get pictures of the pair.

Mélissa is Fils and Yven Morose’s third child. She seemed happy to share the spotlight with her slightly older cousin as her mother expressed how proud she was of her new daughter which is the couples third child.
