A people-helping-people initiative organized by the Orléans Community Garden has managed to provide over 1300 pounds of fresh produce to the Ottawa Mission.

Plant A Row, Grow A Row was first launched on a trial basis by members of the Orleans Community Garden last year. Under the program, seeds are given to gardeners under the provision that any excess produce they grow is donated back to the community.

The trial program was so successtul the Community Garden board of directors decided to implement it on a much broader basis this year. The result was 1,328 lbs of everything from green peppers to egg plant.

An appreciative Chef Ric Watson from the Mission recently came to Orléans to express his gratitude in person.

"To have fresh produce brought to the Mission is amazing," said Watson. "It reduces our food cost and improves the quality of our food. I have nothing but thanks."

The Orléans Community Garden is located on St. Joseph Bld. across from the East Division Police Station with over 48 active gardeners. Residents interested in purchasing lot in the garden can contact president Gina LaPointe at jcocg@hotmail.com.
