Second elementary school in Avalon tops list of public school board priorities

The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board released a list of capital spending priorities on Monday and topping the list is a new elementary school in Avalon.

The community of Avalon is currently served by Avalon.Public School which has an enrollment of 680 students in Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8. The school is only designed to accommodate 495 students. The additional students require 12 portables on site which have taken over the achool yard.

A new school in Avalon was ranked ninth on a list of capital spending priorities last year. Provincial funding covered the top eight projects allowing the new school to move up to the top of the list.

New school funding is usually announced in the spring which means that even if the board gets the money to build a new school, it won't possibly be ready for students until 2015.

Coincidentally, a new school in Avalon is also at the top of the list for capital funding at the Ottawa Catholic School Board. St. Theresa Catholic School is also bursting at the seams operating at nearly 140 per cent capacity.
