The inaugural Orléans Bike 'N Walkathon was held on Sunday with just over 100 participants taking part under a bright blue sky and brillant sunshine.

What the event lacked in numbers it made up for in spirit as everyone involved had a great time while raising over $7,000 for a pair of local charities. The money will be used to support the Fonds Gaulois and the Bruyere Foundation which plans to renovate the kitchen and dining area at the Résidence St-Louis.

Although Orleans Lions Club president Gerry Carisse was disappointed in the turnout, he was elated with the amount of money his organization was able to raise thanks to the generosity of the nearly 50 sponsors who supported the event including Roy & Associates Financial Services and Caisse Populaire Trillium.

"Other than the turnout, it's been great. We raised a lot of money. The people who did come out seem to be having a good time. For this being the first year I'm very happy," said Carisse.

Bruyere Foundation president Amy Desjardins said her organization was grateful for the funds raised and she looked forward to the continuing partnership with the Orleans Lions Club.

"As leaders in the field of aging, the Bruyère Foundation is proud to be one of the recipients of this wonderful event. We're extremely grateful for all the hard work and dedication put in by the Orléans Lions Club and the organizing committee, as well as our numerous sponsors," said Desjardins.

Carisse said he has already made a number of mental notes in areas that he'd like to improve for next year's event. One are they don't need to imrpove on is the number of sponsors they managed to attract -- 49 in all including Lacroix Source for Sports, S&R Plumbing, Scotiabank and École secondaire catholique Garneau.
