Ninety-one area residents were recently honoured by Ottawa-Orléans MP Royal Galipeau for their selfless commitment to their community during the 6th annual Heart of Gold Awards.

This year's recipients came from a variety of backgrounds and were recognized for their volunteer efforts in their school community, their church community and minor sports.

The recipients were honoured in 11 different categories: Arts and Culture; Businesses Serving the Community; Older Citizens Serving; Our Service Clubs; Serving the Community; Serving our Schools; Serving our Guides and Scouts; Serving our Health and Well-Being; Serving our Places of Worship; Serving our Troops and Veterans; and Serving our Resource Centres.

"Volunteerism greatly enriches our community. "There are about 300 organizations in Ottawa-Orléans whose vital natural resource is their team of volunteers. Without them, Orléans would not be what it is today. They make a difference," said Galipeau.

"To all of these big hearts, I thank you for your countless hours and for improving the quality of life of those around you," he added. "Your talent, knowhow and dedication are helping to build the Orléans of tomorrow, an Orléans where helping, sharing and selflessness are valued."

Among this year's recipients was Bertillia Christian who is a member of the International Toastmasters Club and has been actively involved in setting up two local chapters.
