New indoor pool now open in Avalon

Orléans' newest recreation facility is a boon for area swimmers. Located at the corner of Portobello Blvd. and Brian Coburn Way, the $18 million complex boasts a state-of-the-art, 25-metre, six lane pool, a leisure pool and fully accessible change rooms.

A pool was first identified as a top priority in an east end facility needs study undertaken in 2001 which among other things, included a multipurpose arts facility that would become the Shenkman Arts Centre. Economics and a need to change sites due to poor soil conditions delayed construction for years. Based on the final result, it was well worth the wait.

The new pool is both beautiful and fully functional right down to special ramps which make it wheelchair accessible for clients with physical disabilities. The facility also boasts a fitness centre with a full array of the latest equip.m.ent and television monitors which can be synchronized with individual listening devices such as ipods/

There is also a fitness room with special devices that allow the hearing impaired to listen to the instructor using special headphones and two community activity rooms.

The facility already has its first tenant in the Ottawa Swim Club which had to make due with the Ray Friel Recreation Complex Wave Pool for its programming before the new pool was built.

The official grand opening for the Francois Dupuis Recreation Centre will be held next month. In the meantime local residents can drop by the facility and register for a variety of courses and activities including swimming lessons, specialty swim programs, aquafitness classes, aerobics classes, pilates, yoga, zumba, senior fitness classes, children and youth programs, summer camps and fitness memberships.

The pool is open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
