Man in critical condition after falling into frigid water near Petrie Island

By Fred Sherwin
Orléans Online

An unidentified man is in hospital in critical condition after falling into the Ottawa River while fishing on Petrie Island.

According to eye witnesses the man fell down an embankment and slid into the frigid water near the Petrie Island causeway. Two other people fishing nearby were able to drag the unconscious man to shore using a large branch and performed CPR on him until paramedics arrived.

Emergency crews had to use a basket to bring him up from the bottom of the embankment and he was transported to hospital by air ambulance..

Police are warning people to be extra careful when fishing on or near embankments because of the slippery conditions..
