Garneau high school grad Steve Dery was killed while on duty in the northern Quebec community of Kuujjuaq. Family handout

The former Orléans resident who was killed in the line of duty while serving with the Kativik Regional Police Force in northern Quebec on the weekend, will receive a funeral service with full honours.

Steve Dery, 27, was shot to death last Saturday night as he responded to a domestic dispute in the village of Kuujjuaq in northern Quebec. He will be laid to rest this Saturday following a funeral service at Notre Dame Cathedral on Suzzex Drive at 11 a.m.

The funeral is being organized by the the Ottawa Police Service and is expected to be attended by police officers from across Ontario and Quebec.

“On behalf of the serving and retired members of the Ottawa Police Service, I want to extend my deepest sympathies to the Dery family, our police colleagues and the community in Kativik for the tragic loss they have suffered,” Ottawa Police Service Chief Charles Bordeleau said in a statement released on Tuesday. “Const. Dery’s service to his community will be remembered by all of us."

Messages of condolence have been pouring in for the former Garneau high school student. Here's just a small sample.

"Steve, I only remember good times. You beat me up when you were 10 and I was 16. I will forever miss you chez grand maman a pâques and Christmas. Watch over your brothers Ben and Matt. They will need your strength. You died a hero. I love you man. Your cousin, your friend." -- Phil Cyr.

"I didn't know your son but he is the same age as my daughter and we are from Orleans. My heart goes out to you all upon his loss. He looks like a handsome, happy young man in his photo. God bless you!" -- Lorraine Lys.

"We will celebrate how you lived for many years to come. You will always be remembered as a great friend, a great brother, and a selfless hero. Thoughts go out to Steve's family, friends, and all those that were touched by him. I miss you buddy." -- Luc Lauzon

Dery is survived by his father Gilles, mother Celine and brothers Benoit and Mathieu.
