Students and staff at Sir Wilfrid Laurier Secondary School in Orléans kicked off their annual Toy Mountain campaign on Monday with hopes of collecting at least 500 toys for children whose families are facing financially difficulties this holiday season.

That's the number of toys the campaign collected last year and the mininum school council co-presidents Linxi Mytkolli and Erin Poter want to collect this time around.

"Anybody can bring in a toy. The whole school is encouraged to participate. And there are some homerooms that have in class challenges as well," says Mytkolli.

The two student leaders organized the campaign kick-off in the school lobby where an 8-foot Christmas tree has been set up along with a Toy Mountain Chalet built by the school's Grade 12 construction class.

Two young students from the River Heights Preschool Centre were given the honour of lighting the Christmas tree while the school's brass ensemble played a medley of Christmas favourites.

The Toy Mountain campaign will run from Nov. 26 to Dec. 19.. Members of the public can drop off toys at the school which is located at 1515 Tenth Line Rd. between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.
