With old man winter lurking just around the corner it's time to protect yourself from the flu with a free flu shot available at a series of local clinics.

The first free flu shot clinic of the season will be held at Sir Wilfrid Laurier Secondary School next Thursday, Nov. 1from 3:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

This year, the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-term Care has provided three strains of influenza vaccines for distribution, including the 2009 H1N1 strain, the influenza A/H3N2 strain, and an influenza B strain.OPH.

Ottawa's Medical Health Officer Dr. Isra Levy is quick to remind residents that the flu vaccine is perfectly safe and it the most effective way to guard against catching the flu especially for the very young and seniors.

“The flu vaccine is safe and is the most effective way to protect yourself and your loved ones from the flu. I invite residents to talk to their health care provider about the vaccine or attend a free vaccination clinics," says Dr. Levy.

Future free shot clinics will be held at Ecole secondaire Beatrice-Desloges on Nov. 20; Heritage Public School in Navan on Nov. 21; Ecole secondaire Louis-Riel on Nov. 24; St. Matthew High School on Dec. 8; an Cairine Wilson Seconary School on Dec. 11.
