Catholic board makes new school in Avalon top priority

The Ontario Ministry of Education will soon have two requests for funding to build two new schools in the South Orléans community of Avalon.

A week after the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board approved its 2012 capital priorities list with a new school in Avalon ranked 8th, the Ottawa Catholic School Board established it's own priorities with a new elementary school at the top of the list.

According to the Catholic board, St Teresa Catholic School is currently operating at 130 per cent capacity with five portables on site. By comparison, Avalon Public School is operating at 140 per cent capacity with eight portables on site.

The new school would be built at the corner of Esprit Dr. and Vistapark Dr. in the northwest quadrant of Avalon.

The Ontario Ministry of Education has informed boards that up to $350 million has been allocated province wide for new school construction in 2013 and 2014. That's nearly half of the monies allocated last year.

The school boards have been asked to submit wish lists containing their top 10 capital priorities with business cases attached for each project.

The public board is hoping to build a new school in Avalon by 2014, while the Catholic board says it doesn't need a new school until 2015.
