at risk of closing less than six months after opening
By Fred Sherwin
only repretory theatre is at risk of closing its doors
less than six months after its grand opening due to smaller
than expected attendance.
as Orléans' "Family Theatre", the Mayfair Theatre
Orléans opened on Dec. 2 with high hopes of attracting
theatre-goers interested in a more diverse cinematic experience
than what is offered by the large cineplexes such as The
Empire Theatre and Silver City.
main focus of the theatre is on family-friendly programming
with movies such as "Dr. Suess' The Lorax" and
"The Three Stooges", but their niche is first-run
independent movies and foreign movies such as "The
Room", "The Flowers of War" and the critically
acclaimed "Les neiges du Kilimandjaro" whch
are all currently playng at the Orleans Town Centre theatre.
theatres owners were hoping that a mix of first run mainstream
movies with indepenent films and cinema classics would
be a winning formula and judging by the more than 2,500
memberships they sold, they thought they were on the right
track. The problem is that the members aren't coming often
enough and non-members aren't coming in large enough numbers.
a message to the theatre's members, the owners make it
clear that if attendance doesn't improve significantly
and soon, they will be left with no choice but to close
we have sold more than 2500 membership cards, the overall
attendance has been nowhere close to the numbers we were
originally expecting. If we are not able to increase attendance
in the immediate future we will be forced to close our
doors for good very soon."
admission tickets are $9 for non-members and $5 for members
who purchase a $10 yearly membership. Children and seniors
pay only $5.
weekend's lineup includes "Wrath of the Titans",
"The Three Stooges", the sing-a-long version
of "The Sound of Music", "The Snows of
Kilimandjaro" and "21 Jump Street".
