Whether you are an experienced artist looking to expand your horizons or a youngster with a flair for drawing, you may want to consider dropping by the Visual Arts Centre Orléans to register for one of their many spring courses.

Programs are grouped according to age with courses available for youngsters aged 6 to 8, youth aged 9 to 12, teens aged 13 to 19 and adults over the age of 19.

For youngsters aged 6 to 8 the Visual Arts Centre is offering two drawing courses: “Draw and sketch” and “Drawing for fun”, as well as 3D Kids designed to teach students the basics of simple 3D and relief sculpture. The programs are eight weeks long, starting the final week of April. The cost runs from $64 for the “Draw and sketch” course to $120 for the 3D arts course. Materials are supplied.

The courses for youth aged nine to 12 include “Draw and sketch”, “Drawing for Fun” and “3D Arts” as well as “Cartooning and animation” and “Mixed media” which allows the students to explore their creativity and learn how to work with acrylic and watercolour paint, paper, canvas, collage and print making techniques.

A variety of programs are also available for teens aged 13 to 16 including “Drawing for Fun”, “3D Arts”, “Cartooning and animation” and “Mixed media”. Other courses include “Contemporary art – Graffiti metamorphosis” in which students learn the secrets behind graffiti's many techniques, and use them to create big and small murals, and “Portfolio develop.m.ent for post-secondary applications”.

For adults, VACO offers a wide variety of drawing, painting and sculpture courses including basic and intermediate life drawing; classical oil painting; colour mixing and palette selection; soft pastels; coloured pencil; photography and plein-air painting.

Former VACO director and accomplished artist Susan Ashbrook will be teaching a number of the courses including: “The fine art of acrylic glazing”; “The ABC’s of Acrylic Painting I”; and “Acrylics à la carte”.

One of the more interesting courses being offered this spring is called “Art for Dummies”. The mini four week course is being taught by veteran VACO instructor Debra Czernecky who will help students get started in the world of drawing and painting in a welcoming environment.

And for those people who are more interested in carving than picking up a paint brush or pencil, André Breau from the National Woodworking School will be teaching an intermediate level course in relief wood carving Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. from April 18 until May 18. The cost is $207 for VACO members and $225 for non-members, materials included.

The centre will also be hosting a number of workshops throughout the spring. Charlie Spratt will be giving an acrylic workshop on May 6 and 7 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; Doug Pourdon will be hosting an acrylics and oil workshop on May 13 and 14 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Noted urban landscape artist John Alexander Day will be giving a plein-air painting workshop on June 3 and 4 during the same hours; and last but not least, Andrea Mossop Green will be hosting the Georgia O’Keeffe “Flower Power” Workshop on April 22 and 23. Prices vary depending on the workshop.

Residents interested in registering for any of the Visual Arts Centre courses or workshops can contact the centre at 830-5420 or drop by Tuesday, Thursday or Friday between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. or Wednesdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
