While
marginally more expensive than assembly line, factory-made
furniture, solid wood furniture, indivdually-milled
by skilled craftsmen, is an investment that will pay
for itself a hundred times over.
At
The New Oak Tree, they sell only the highest quality
hand-made furniture. The quality and care that goes
into each piece can easily be seen as you browse through
their brightly lit showroom. It's apparent in the
fine finishing, quality hardware, and eye-catching
upholstery.Well-made furniture will last for many
years and see extraordinary use during its lifetime.
That's why The New Oak Tree craftsmen go to such extraordinary
lengths in constructing each and every piece.
Custom-made
furniture means the custimer can choose the type of
wood, colour and size they want. And because each
piece comes with a 100%, unconditional, lifetime guarantee,
it literally lasts forever.
The
man behind the business is Don Murray, who you may
have seen in The New Oak Tree's trademark commercials
in which he dances on a dining table.
Murray
has been in the furniture business for most of his
84 years. As a young boy growing up in Campbellton,
New Brunswick he used to tool around his father's
workshop. At 13, he decided to build a 36-inch round
coffee table. After it was finished a neighbour offered
him $5 for it.
"Back
then a good day's wages for a well paid job was about $2 a day. I picked up the
phone and called the newspaper and told them I wasn't going to deliver their paper
anymore. That's when my love of working with wood was born," says Murray.
After
serving in the navy during the Second World War, he
returned to Canada and held various jobs before finally
deciding to go back to school. After graduating from
university, his love of working with wood and making
furniture would lure him to Port Hope were he started
The Old Oak Tree furniture factory and retail store
over 50 years ago.
Over
the years the business expanded to over 29 stores in both Canada and the U.S.
Murray also helped other individuals set up their own factories which would end
up supplying his stores. A
few years ago he decided to sell off all his stores and quietly slip into retirement.
Sadly, his wife passed away shortly afterwards and Murray was left with an emptiness
that could only be filled by re-igniting his passion for creating and building
fine furniture.
He
reopened a store and finishing centre in Port Hope,
under The New Oak Tree brand, and later opened a second
store in Carleton Place. Murray decided to open a
store in Navan during a visit to the east end village
in 2008. When he found out the old Navan Feedmill
property was up for sale, he purchased it and moved
in next door.
Although
he has only lived in Navan for three short years,
he has become a pillar of the community and has supported
everything from the new cenotaph to the Navan Women's
Institute cookbook.
The
New Oak Tree sells only the finest quality North American-made
solid wood furniture using oak, cherrywood, maple,
hickory and elm, and every piece comes with a lifetime
